Alina Philippova — New East 100

8 July 2017

Moscow-based Alina Philippova is one of Russia’s new wave of independent filmmakers working outside existing institutional networks to attain creative freedom. Her debut Holy Days, released online earlier this year, traces the path of two siblings as they wander through fields, river banks and semi-derelict buildings. The film hardly features a single spoken word — it is a symphony of silences and voids, an enigmatic ode to loss, longing and connection. Philippova has always been interested in Russia’s new generation and their worldview — the preoccupation she shares with collaborators from various creative fields, including noise duo Love Cult, for whom she has directed several music videos.
